
Stroboscopic examination involves a rapidly flashing light which slows down the movement of the larynx so that any subtle problems – particularly those associated with prolonged professional voice use – can be demonstrated diagnosed and appropriately treated. A digital recording of the examination is made in every case. The option exists for either digital recording and/or appropriate video prints to be given to the patient and/or subsequent therapists. In particularly complex cases electrophysiological diagnosis can take place. This involves inserting a small needle through the skin into the small muscles of the larynx so that electrical activity can be monitored.
This is very useful in the diagnosis of various nerve and muscle disorders such as paralysis of the vocal fold due to a variety of reasons. The Clinic was the first to introduce flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. This involves having a small flexible telescoping camera in the nostril whilst the patient swallows a variety of substances of differing textures to ascertain why swallowing disorders take place and how best to treat them.
If appropriate treatment is surgical, the substantial expertise that A/Prof Havas has is afforded to the patient in terms of a large variety of microlayrngeal surgeries including the application of the latest laser technologies which are particularly applicable to treating both benign lesions of the larynx and early laryngeal cancers.
